Depersonalization Disorder

I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, because I'm not myself you see. ~
"Alice in Wonderland"
Lewis Carroll

Depersonalization is the third most common psychological symptom (after the feelings of anxiety and depression) but what is Depersonalization?

Depersonalization is a feeling of unreality.  When a person is experiencing depersonalization they may feel as if they are “in a dream” as nothing around them feels real.  The feeling may be accompanied by dizziness or lightheadedness.  There may be a sense of being “outside” of your own body or a feeling like you are “in a movie”.   This can be a scary experience and anxiety frequently accompanies it.

Why does depersonalization occur?  Depersonalization is typically a response to a traumatic event, such as an accident, assault, serious illness or injury.
