Coping with Anger

Some experts believe that suppressing anger can lead to both depression and anxiety. It is therefore important to find healthy ways to express anger.  As Survivors we may not have been able to express the anger we felt when we were being abused. However, we can learn to express our anger now.  Anger may feel scary and even overpowering but not all anger is negative. There are some positive aspects of anger. The first aspect is self-protection, where our bodies are aroused into a state where they can respond with maximum physical energy for our defense in response to potential hurt. This is often referred to as the 'fight’ component of the fight-or-flight response.
